Capsule wardrobe is a term coined in the 1970’s by Susie Faux, the owner of a London boutique. This idea was further popularized by Donna Karan, an American Designer, by releasing an impressive capsule collection containing seven interchangeable work-wear pieces. Read on to find out how a capsule wardrobe can do loads of good for you.
What is this Capsule Wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don't go out of fashion. The aim is to have an outfit for any occasion without owning excessive items of clothing. This is usually done by buying what are considered to be ‘primary’ items in coordinating colors.
It is also essential that we create the capsule wardrobe with fewer ‘essential’ items.
Why have a capsule wardrobe?
While we dream of owning every outfit that comes off the runway in Milan or New York, let’s face it; we just don’t have the moolah to have it all. We don’t have a personal assistant who would sort through the tons of stuff and dress us up either.
Well, here’s why it’s prudent to work on your capsule wardrobe:
• Saves money.
• Saves space.
• Lets you spend on other essential things.
• Makes you more organized.
• Saves time, as you don’t have to go through gazillion outfits and go crazy.
• Being content with what you have (this is more philosophical).
• Makes traveling in style a lot easier and lighter.
My Idea of a Capsule Wardrobe:
I’m up for bright and bold hues and usually go easy on floral motifs. I also believe in clothing that can be worn in multiple ways is an excellent choice for creating many looks and saving space at the same time.
I have suggested only the type of outfits. You can choose your favorite or inspiring colors and patterns.
Here’s how I would create my Capsule Wardrobe.
#1. Crop Pants in Bold Hues:
Try crop pants in vibrant and bold hues like Azure Blue for a fresh feel. Combine it with dress up shirt or simple white Tee along with a blazer for a chic and professional look. Or, pair them with casual tops for a laid back look.

Layer up with cardigans for a swank look and to dress up a simple top. Even better, invest in a cardigan that can be worn in different ways. This way you get more looks for the same piece of clothing.
#3. Changeable Length Dress:
In the mood for a maxi dress, or need a midi dress, or want to flaunt a mini dress? Well, you can get the length you desire with changeable length dress. With a draw of strings, change your outfit instantly.
#4. Midi Dress:
It is splendid when a piece of clothing can be used in more ways than intended. A dress can be used as a dress (obviously) as a Tunic to come up with at least dozen different ways to wear them.
#5. Wrap Dress/Cardigan:
A Wrap dress is a great choice to look elegant and feminine. What if you could repurpose a wrap dress as a long cardigan or a light jacket? It will definitely save space in your wardrobe as well as your suitcase when traveling.
#6. Reversible Tunics/Tops:
Two looks for the price of one – Who wouldn’t want that?!
#7. Reversible Dress:
Here’s a feminine version of getting more out of your outfits. One dress with two very different looks is a dream come true for all those looking for a clutter free and stress-free wardrobes.

#8. Versatile Power Suit:
Dressing boldly does give us a boost of confidence. Power are capable of doing this. So why not invest in a power suit that elevates your spunk and is versatile all at once. This two piece power suit can be mixed and matched with other outfits as well to look effortlessly classy.
#9. Denim Jacket:
This is an iconic piece of clothing that will fit most of the seasons, body type and personality. And the best part, you can wear them with anything. You can pair it with jeans, maxi dress, lace dress, sequin skirts, or pair it with leopard-printed outfits. You can opt for a light wash, medium wash or a dark denim and change the way you wear them to give a fresh look that suits the season.
#10. Good Old Jeans:
For most of us, Jeans is one of those go-to clothing items as we can dress quickly and effortlessly. You can choose from flared, straight cut, boot cut, or skinny, depending on your mood and occasion.
#11. Button-Down Shirt:
It’s one of those pieces that we all need to have in our closet. It is most often paired with a workwear clothing to look professional. You can pair it with skinny jeans, a maxi skirt, wear it under a sweater or pair it with boyfriend jeans. The button-Down shirt comes in so many of different colors, lengths and materials. So, why stick to plain old White when you can try out different looks.
Who doesn't want to look confident? Just pop this on and you are on your way to looking cool and confident.

This is just a guideline and my choices for creating a capsule wardrobe. You will need to determine which pieces you should add to your closet based on your own lifestyle and wardrobe needs.
